Variations on Instant Insanity

چکیده
In one of the first papers about the complexity of puzzles, Robertson and Munro [12] proved that a generalized form of the thenpopular Instant Insanity puzzle is NP-complete. Here we study several variations of this puzzle, exploring how the complexity depends on the piece shapes and the allowable orientations of those shapes. Prepared in honor of Ian Munro’s 66th birthday.

The Use of Vision and Manipulation to Solve the "Instant Insanity" Puzzle
This paper describes a system which solves the puzzle "Instant Insanity". The puzzle consists of four multicolored cubes. The solution involves arranging the cubes in a tower so that no side of the tower reveals more than one face of a given color. Our system, which runs as eight (multitask) jobs under the PDP-10 time-sharing system, uses a TV camera to locate four objects and, having verified ...

Voltaire said that Archimedes had more imagination than Homer. Unfortunately, as far as we know, Archimedes’s only use of it, outside of mathematics, was to condemn goldsmiths and to kill people. More peaceful uses of mathematicians’ imagination, to the outside of mathematics, in decreasing order of impact, were provided by Multi-Millionaire Richard Garfield, the Reverend Charles Dodgson, and M...

This research describes the outc...

legal practice of taking these constraintsincluding insanity-into consideration was the attempt to understand the actions of criminals from their own point of view. The crime committed under insanity thus became an understandable act, and the insane criminal became an individual whose motivation and will were fathomable. Rather than simply labelling the insane with the stereotypes of madness or...
متن کاملUnpacking insanity defence standards: An experimental study of rationality and control tests in criminal law
The present study investigated the impact of different legal standards on mock juror decisions concerning whether a defendant was guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. Undergraduate students (N = 477) read a simulated case summary involving a murder case and were asked to make an insanity determination. The cases differed in terms of the condition of the defendant (rationality deficit or ...
